And who is this bad boy? Looks like he's wearing armor. New one for me.

I think it is a young grass hopper.

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

some kind of grasshopper.

Now Josephine, he does not look like any grasshopper I've seen, and I've seen a lot. Some summers it looks like the eight plague of Egypt....hmmm, no, that was locusts, wasn't it? Anyway, I think he's different. Maybe a distant cousin, or something.

Could it be a mole cricket nymph?

You need to ask on bug ID forum.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

not mole cricket, may be a tree cricket type

On the following link, scroll down to the 13th image and see close up of grasshopper nymph. The photo looks like a grasshopper nymph to me. Nymphs are immature grasshoppers. They dont have wings or reproductive organs.

shudder, and they wonder where they find ideas for monsters on tv! I still don't see grasshopper, I see a cricket.

Kitt, crickets are brown or black, no stripes or markings usually.

Tree crickets are green

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

yes,they are. Forgot about those.

Well, it's close, but not really the same. If you notice, my guy is green behind the black mid-section, while the other one is black. I'm talking about the chromacris psittacus. I think that's the one you meant, but my screen kept jumping around so much while I was scrolling that I couldn't be sure of my count.
