Anyone in my area want Cannas?

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Grandson, Mason, is digging up Cannas today. Oh, they are so beautiful! Orange. Some of my newer shrubs are really taking off and need more room than the Cannas are giving.

If anyone wants them, I will trim them up and keep them for you. They are very healthy. All you have to know to grow Cannas is "Get out of the way."

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

I wish I were closer. Thanks for offering!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Sweetmommy maybe in the fall we can get together as I have orange and yellow/orange I would be happy to share with you. :)

Sybram I shared alot with my neighbors when I thinned mine out this spring. I hope some of my others will bloom so I can see what colors I really have. Really nice of you to offer yours here.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I just hate to waste them, because they are almost the perfect plant. Easy and so pretty. I gave boxes and boxes away last fall, and had some for the spring RU. And now, more.

I posted on my church's FB page (Alsbury Baptist), and already have two people wanting them. A friend came this afternoon, and took a lot, so I'm happy so many are finding new homes.

I did the same with Elephant Ears. My friends have done some recent landscaping (a wall all across the back of their place plus other things), and they were so glad to get the EEs and Cannas. Said EEs were so expensive to buy. I wouldn't know. Can't remember ever buying one. Maybe I did........many years ago.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Which EE do you have? Maybe you could give one to Smockette if you go to the same RU and I am not there. Do you have a picture of it? I love Elephant ears.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I have no idea what the name of my EEs are. They are pretty big, though. Smockette usually comes to the north Texas RU, so I'll be glad to have some for her. I guess she would just want the bulb, not potted, since it will soon be time to cut them back after that. What do you think.

Last fall I thinned out my EEs and had many to share. I gave away a lot, but still had lots that I packed away in heavy cardboard boxes. I separated the layers with hay. Seemed like a good idea to me, but when I unpacked them this spring, many were dried up. Actually, I went ahead and potted up some that I thought were ruined just to see what would happen, and some of them grew. Anyone have advice on how to do a better jub of storing these?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I was asking for myself and if you could give them to Smockette for me but she may want a few too. I would think potted or just the bulb would be ok since they grow year round here in 9b.

For saving them over the winter I would think packing them in cardboard box would work but would put mulch around them or straw and that should keep them moist but not wet. or just a bed of mulch in a box and maybe a light spray once a month? I will ask around and see what seems to work best and get back to you.

Sure wish I was closer... kind offer!!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm happy to share and with you, ilovejesus. Just let me know what you find out about storage and also if Smockette will be coming.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I found this. I like the panyhose one.
You will probably find the original bulb has several pups and the original may be partly rotted. Cut away any part that is rotted and dry out the bulb. The stems will be hard to dry completely. If you can peel them away without damaging the bulb, do it. If not cut them down as much as possible and let the cut dry (it's called a scab or callus). If the pups get separated, that is ok. Let them dry thoroughly too. You can dust everything lightly with a fungicidal bulb dust. Wrap the bulbs loosely in newspaper and store the bulbs in either a corrugated cardboard box or a wood slat bushel basket. Do not use plastic in any form. It will cause the bulbs to rot. It's best if the bulbs don't touch each other. Fill the box with lots of crumpled newspaper and store in a dry area with temps below 45 and above 38oF. In Wisconsin that means against an outside wall in an area thats being heated or an inside wall where there is no heat.
Many of the other colocasias and alocasias don't develop bulbs as large as the EEs but can grow many smaller bulbs. The secret is to not let them freeze and keep them dry until spring. In the spring, when you take them out of the paper they may have sprouts already growing. Treat them gently. If the sprouts are damaged, it may cause the bulb to rot at that spot. Some of the smaller colocasias do nicely as houseplants.

A lady on the forum recently suggested storing bulbs in pantyhose - yep! She said dry them off well, dust them with the fungicide, stick them in knee high pantyhose, and hang the pantyhose in a cool closet (for air circulation). I thought, what a concept, and less risk for rot! Thought I'd share that with you.

Like you would store onions- because of the water content cant store like garlics...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Synrum, will you send a box of the canna's for postage? I would love to try them here.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Taters, I would be glad to send you cannas for postage if there are any left. Two people from my church want them and were to pick them up this week. However, we have had a tragic thing happen here. Our youth pastor was killed Sat. night about midnight, when he stopped to help a motorist. He was one of 4 killed. Others injured. We are all grieving so, but trying to help and comfort others involved, also. One of the people who wanted cannas was my pastor, so I'll find out how many he needs and just take them over to them. I'll contact the other friend who wanted some, and then get back to you.. BTW, I also have Tropicanna that are way too thick in a little bed, so those will be available, too. They have the colored leaves and an orange flower. So pretty.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh No! So sorry to hear of that accident! Sending prayers for all involved! Please fill your commitments first, and if there are any left, let me know. If not this year, then maybe next? The tropicanna sounds very pretty! Thanks so much!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Will do.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

sybram you do what you need to and I can send some to taters next month. When you get around to it and dig the Tropicanna you can share with her and maybe by then I might want some also :) Is this ok with you Linda Kay? Would next month work for you?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That will work just fine! Thanks!

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

Taters, just fyi - cannas are tropical & will go like gangbusters in Del Rio, even if you hold of one or two they will quickly multiply.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks for, that info. Can't wait to try them.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Sybil, i'm so saddened by the lost of your pastor, and the others in the accident. how absolutely sickening.
he surely has jewels in his crown for not only pastoring in your church, but by being a good samaritan.
God bless his family.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Cajun. It's a hard time for us, but God is bigger than death. Please pray for our youth.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sybil, so sorry about the deaths of those in your area and especially the youth pastor. I saw the news on that, it was a freak tragic accident. God does work in mysterious ways. Good will come of this but it doesn't make the loss hurt less.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Sheila. Encouraging words are appreciated. We're trying to see that all families involved are visited. My pastor, Scott Sharman and his wife, Phyllis, went to the funeral in Mansfield of the motorist who was stopped on the side of the road. Little 96 year old pastor.

Dallas, TX

Linda! I have been trying to figure out where I knew you from! You are one of my FB friends. I think I even sent you a message asking where I knew you from. Thank you for being my friend.♥
I gave away all my Cannas I think, they multiply so fast and I could not keep up with growth. My favorite was the orange one and one with the striped leaves.
I am willing to send someone a bubble bag with postage on it.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Sylvia. Nice to see you here. Small world! If you have extras to share, that would be great! Thanks so much!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Sylvia are you giving cannas away or wanting some? I will be back sometime in August and before I left the patches I dug were sprouting more. So I will have enought for a couple people. Both Yellow/orange and orange By next year should have some with pretty stripped leaves if they multiply well like the others :)

Dallas, TX

Girl, where are you? lol I finally found Linda (Smockette), no wonder I hadn't heard from you. I had not seen you on FB either. Are you going to the TNLA convention? I have to go this year, its in Dallas, lucky me! :)
Yes I would love some Cannas! Do you have my address, if not get it from Linda.

LINDA, no I dont have any Canna's . Every time I look next door I could kick myself. I gave her so many. This time I am planting them out front!
