Anyone close to Austin............

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Do any of you know of a landscape crew who wants a small project? We could use some help.

We are enlarging this space and putting in a border....and wall.

And while this is happening, the rest of yard still needs work....LOL. I can never get my DH to do one project at a time.

Thank you frostweed - but I have to say....everything IS bigger in Texas. For my DH it's projects!

did you find anyone to help you out?
would love to see your finished projects!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We haven't found anyone yet.......so far my DH is doing most of the work. But it's still coming along.

We've mounded some dirt, and are starting to put in the edge of stone.

I'll be buying plants soon. Any suggestions on Tropical looking trees?
We already have a Pindo Palm for it, and Sagos from pups.
But this is a BIG space.....

hmmm i'm not great at landscaping, but the following trees and/or plants come to mind:

Mimosa
Banana
Upright elephant ears
Pride of Barbados
Esperanza
Loquat
Gingers
Variegated plants... ??
Pomegranate
Cassia - I love C. alata (candlebush)
Orchid Tree
Gunnera
Hibiscus
Datura

and then more Texas /Southwest staples:
Agave (I love LOVE my blue agave... it gets BIG, easy care, multiplies, and it's pretty... what more can you ask for??)
Yucca (so many interesting varieties, including a yucca tree. I need to find out what variety are growing on 105 just down the road--I love them!)

just brainstorming here...

Cajun2 - thanks.....you gave some good suggestions. We have some of those already.....but now I will check out some more. And thanks for the reminder of Pride of Barbados.....it's one I always remember too late to put in. But not this time. :-)

I know. me too, Morgan. I just found my seeds yesterday and went "dang it! I did it again!!" LOL

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

You can grow from seed? But will they bloom the first year?

I put in tons of Hollyhock seeds one time. Only a few came up....and took two years to bloom Ugh!

Of course now I understand it is our soil that sucks.....and we fix that baby good these days. Supplement like crazy.

Now plants thrive........unless the heat gets to them...LOL.

Wow!! That's gorgeous!
I dunno yet about the PoB....have never grown it (yet!)
Now i DID start some hollyhocks from seed back in Benbrook.
Couldn't believe it when they all bloomed the first year!!

Yes, very beautiful landscape Morgan.

Morgan, if you want to try these seeds (they are from last year, I think), I will be happy to share.

My PoB didn't bloom until the second year but it was worth the wait.
Nice work, Morgan!

Vitex bush does well, can be pruned into sort of a bushy tree, blooms intermittently all summer, every time it gets enough water. Smells herby - kind like lavender

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We have two Vitex trees already Gypsi. Are PoB perennial?

Thank you Cajun2 - I would.....could you d-mail me and I'll give you info. How sweet.

I would love to do this new area in all perenials but I think this year I will put in a bunch of annuals since we are entertaining for the 4th of July and I want it pretty. But anything big must be perrennial.
I did get some Bee Balm, A small white fig tree, some Jasmine, Pentas, and Gaura. Oh, and some white Plumbago. LOL, it sounds like a lot, but it won't nearly fill it.

I am trying to stay away from Crape Myrtle and Vitex, because when they shed it blows in the pool. Yuck! But love them both. It's getting warm so I just want everything to live!!

oh yes!! Vitex! i keep forgetting about Vitex and i LOVE it! i have tried several times to grow it... not sure what my problem is ~ sigh.
LOVE Plumbago! i saw that our local grower (huge, not commercial) has had Plumbago out this past week. i swear, if my garden chores weren't about to overwhelm me, i'd have stopped and bought several. their blue is breathtaking to me. so peaceful, cool, and refreshing to see on a hot Texas summer day.

Jasmine is awesome! great idea to get those before your party. great colors, scents, and interest.
i plan to get some Bee Balm started this fall for next year. can't wait!

check ur Dmail!
can't wait to see updated pics *smile*
