"Ida" arborea

FSH, TX

The plant is a real B. arborea. The leaves on the stem can be up to
45 cm long, but the flowers only 14-18 cm.

Tonny made cv. "Ida" a few years ago. Its a cross between two specimens
of D. arborea. Parent #1 was a heavy flowerer, but lost many fruits.
Parent #2 had fewer flowers, but kept most of its fruits (in zone 7).

I have started growing cuttings from "Ida" and another very heat tolerant arborea from Vero Florida. All the Ida cuttings have made it so far while the cuttings from Vero are all almost dead. If I can get one to make it from the Vero collection I think I might have a very good chance at creating a much hardier arborea for florida. Hopefully one that grows as fast and fruits as easily as the "Ida" and one that is as heat tolerant as the Vero clone. As this is my first year with these only time will tell. Perhaps "Ida" will prove even more heat tolerant than the Vero Clone. I have personally seen the Vero clone after it died back in the summer and was growing strong later that year. The Vero Clone seems very promising knowing that it has survived that far south to come back and flower for us yet again....Just food for thought for all those would be arborea/flava hybridizers....
Can't wait for Tonny to get here himself....

Tonny is sending me an arborea, I don't think it's the named one though. I will be working on crossing it in the spring.

Tig,
As arborea is self fertile, you should be able to cross it no matter what. Of course it would be nice to cross it to a different arborea or a flava or vulcanicola hybrid. So far, my Roter Vulkan is still living outside. Perhaps it may make it, but I sincerly think you have a better chance at those crosses than I do Tig. By the way Tig, you should have mail from me today.

don't have a flava, will work on that. What about aurea and arborea, good candidates? I do have those baby sanquinea seedlings, don't know how far I'll get with them. See what you started!!! :)
waiting with baited breath for the mailman.
