Rosemary

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

My Rosemary is huge and really pretty, although over the last couple of years I've had to cut out a few dead/diseased stalks. Those didn't grow back or fill in, so it looks a little holey now. Any way to fix it, or should I just pull it up and start with a new one? I've done that a few times, but I'd like to save this one if possible. I never trim it except when it's got a bad stalk/frond or whatever you call it.

What kind of rosemary? most of em do get that look, have you pinched any ends off it or just whole branches? Mine gets ends pinched back, and branches off and keeps growing, my dau just does the replacing thing tho. Take one of those branches and lay it over and place dirt and rock it til it roots, snip it and you have a new plant. At this season with it so cool you could just break off a branch and bury it 3/4" and it would root.

Thanks, Kitt. Yeah, they grow so easily here, but this one is so big that I just wanted to save it if I could. I've never pinched it. I think I'll try doing that--just trim it all over and see what happens. Maybe it will fill in.

That would have helped mine if trimmed all over and kept it from going dead in center. sigh. :) Growing more myself...

sybram
I took a class from the Dallas herb Society.
I always follow their suggestion and my Rosemary looks great !
Every year on February 14th (San Valentine) I trim the Rosemary of 1/3 of its size.
In this way the tip of the plant are always tender and perfect for cooking.
I use the hard part of the branches I cut as a skewers for my grilling.

I am going to remember that! St Valentines Day is for Rosemary haircut. Thanx drthor!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Drthor. I'm going to follow your suggestion, but do you think it would be ok to cut it back now and in Feb.?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Trim now, she cuts it back 1/3 in Feb. Makes since since mine grows the most in spring til the deep heat of summer slows it. It needs the trim, you might do it at different lengths instead of a hedgetrim style for now.

Thanks. Good idea, and I'll let you guys know if I kill it or not. lol

I only have 1 child. My girl gave me 3 grandkids and I now have 1GRET grandson 2 yrs old. I am very proud of her,but I suspect her IQ is higher than mine- 162, even when I was MUCH younger and not aging so fast.

Why has my Rosemary never bloomed? Will cutting it back help? It's at least 15yrs old and I've never done anything with it, I don't like how Rosemary smells...I know, I know. Lol

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Trim it, makes it branch, flowers on NEW growth.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok it's growing but has never flowered. No harm in trying.

My rosemary never flower either.
There are many varieties of rosemary.
I grow mine for cooking.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

How many different rosemary s do you have drthor?

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Just 2 plants in the back and 8 plants in the front garden.
They are all the same variety.
and how many rosemary do you have?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I thought they all bloomed, except for mine. I really don't like how they smell.
