I heard that you harvest your garlic in June. This is my first time to try it. I pulled one today, and it looks pretty scrawny. I don't think it's going to be filled out enough by June. I guess I didn't water it enough. The little sections are just beginning to pooch out.
Will my garlic be ready?
This will be my first year for garlic. I pulled a couple yesterday and looked just a little bigger not much.
I just wait until the tops turn brown.
Just bc it says they should be ready at a certain time doesn't mean much. The temps have been so strange I agree with Dennis, the plants will tell you when they are ready. I still have potatoes in the ground, which is crazy considering it is the middle of May.
Well I pulled the two yesterday due to the fact the top were brown and laying down. But my temps have already been hitting in the 90 a few times.
Sybil, I think you pulled too soon, which kind of garlic is it?
The wild onions are just beginning to turn brown. They are on their own, no help from me. Usually by May they are long gone.
Frostweed, I just got a bag of garlic at Sams' and planted the bigger bulbs. I thought it was real early, seems like Oct. or Nov. I figured they would lie dormant until spring, but they sprouted and grew right away.
Yes, you plant garlic in October so that was the right time, but you need to separate the bulbs into cloves before planting.
I think that if you let them stay in the ground until the tops are dry, you will get something from them.
OK, thanks. I did plant the cloves--just the larger ones. I only pulled one. Just wanted to see what the little fellers were doin'.
It should work out well then.
someone wrote here last year about eating the buds of the elephant garlic Please tell me more thanks Joe
Yes, it was me, here is the link to my garlic tutorial http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/frostweed/4151/

I also did pulled one of my largest size garlic ... I thought it was ready because it was so huge ... but the cloves are not yet forming ... so it is still early.
Which is a great news ! The garlic this year is going to be BIG !
