I just bought this clem and it had an Ernest Markham tag in it, but I don't think it looks anything like the pics that I've seen of Ernest Markham. Do you know what this guy is? It looks a whole lot like Niobe, but the stepals are a bit more curled/rainbowed than Niobe instead of flat and the color is much, much darker than Niobe. A dark raisin color. The color on the pic is very, very close to the actual plant. Thanks for the help!
Can you ID this clem for me?
That was my first thought Jasperdale.
Definitely not Ernest Markham. I guess it could be Niobe, but I have Niobe and the color is not even close to her and the petals are more arched. Pirl, what do you think?
Pirl is puzzled. I'd rule out Ernest Markham and Niobe due to the rounded edges yours show.
I believe it is the Clematis Romantica. Gorgeous plant!
Hope this helps

Love your link and added it to my Favorites already. Thanks so much!
My pleasure. :)
Yes. That's a really good site !
Thanks so much, everyone! I do think it's Romantika. Glad to have an ID for the new clem. I knew those were mislabeled when I saw them!
I am here - late to the party as usual ^_^.
Love the new site, Colleen. I have book marked it as well.
I double checked on COW - looks like Romantika to me too. Love the color.
I saved the site, too. I've seen it before but lost it.. BTW, because of her, I tracked down and ordered Rebiga. It's a paper covered wire tie from Germany that vineyards use, looks just like jute. I ordered a bundle of 5" pieces and a spool. Lifetime supply! But I'll use it on a lot of things other than clems.

I too bookmarked that site that is a great site. Today was driving along and saw a deep dark but also very rich purple Clematis at someones house and wanted to stop and ask them what the name of it was now I can just go through the A to Z pictures and maybe I'll find it.
Thanks
Jan
