I had an alocasia x portodora that made berries and I planted them. The seeds were easy to start, I just pushed them into some potting soil in a starter flat with 24 little divisions and then I went to Sweden for a month. When I got home my partner had kept them alive. I had pretty much given up on them. I got 24 baby plants, including 2 that are different from all the rest. Unless you want a lot of plants, it may not be worth it. I think I'm going to just have to compost some of mine.

Why would you compost them. I would like to try if they will come back as the mother. It will be interesting.

I am composting them because they are big plants and I have a dozen of them already. You are right, it is interesting.

Peony, I'd love to see a picture of the seedlings/plants you got from those berries. I have yet to set seed on any of my portoras, although they have plenty of pollen. If you got self-set, you have what I'm looking for. I'm especially interested in the ones that are different from the others. Tell me more!

I had oodles of Thai giants come up from seeds LOL About 4 yrs ago the plant made seeds.I did not know what they were and when the plant died back just cut off the seed thingy and thru it in a container that was sitting near by. In the spring I probably had 100 pups. Gave them to everyone here I could get to take them. It has been about 3 years or since then and no one has told me how the plants did or didn't do. Sure wish I knew.

Yes, I just saw this. Thanks for bumping it up. I'll get some pics tomorrow. I did post pics of the seed when it was set.

Peony,
I checked your pic of the seed when it set and I have to let you know that your plant pictured is not Alocasia x portora. It is Alocasia odora, from which I get regular seed set as well. See link below for my pages on Alocasia x portora. As the person who developed that hybrid over 30 years ago (!), I am 100% certain of my identification.
