brugmansia leaf curl and yellowing

Huntington Beach, CA

I have about 10 brugs. most are from cuttings of an original plant in the ground about 20 years old. The cuttings I've taken are like the original in every way. healthy, large apricot colored flowers...a joy to look at. My problem is with two cuttings that I mail ordered, One is a sanguinea thats now about two feet tall and was doing well i thought. But its leaves have lightened in color and are starting to curl under..oh oh. Another plant, a white one, did this and then developed brown spots, the leaves died and fell off. now I have a stick. Whats going on?

They may have spider mites, look closely on the back of the leaves, if it is spider mites it will be speckled with little white or brown dust looking mites, you might even see what looks like a web. Check all of your plants, they tend to appear when the weather conditions have been dry. You also get different pests from greenhouse grown plants, spider mites and broad mites.

Took a leaf to two nurseries yesterday. One didn.t know anything...said try moving to a different spot. The other said he bet it was overwatering....didn't think it was possible with a brug but I'll try anything to save this sanguinea!

Every brug is worth saving. Keep us posted.

If they are too wet the roots will rot. I have done this for other plants this past year because we got a lot of rain over the summer. i take the plant and soil out of the pot and set them on the potting bench until they dry out.
Always feel the soil before you water, if you have them in a big pot, try repotting them in something smaller till they grow bigger. I believe Sangs might be more picky about having wet feet, especially when they are small. I know when I grew them, they had all kinds of fungal problems here in the wet summers of South Florida. I ended up throwing them all out.

I bought Bifen XTS. It is killing the spider mites and just about every thing else. I went psycho on my back yard with it. Very effective stuff.
