spiders freak me out. Anyone know what kind of spider this is and if should let him out from under the glass or smash him?

Looks like a male cobweb spider in the genus Steatoda - http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/spiders/Steatoda%20grossa.htm
Females can have a painful (but not dangerous) bite.
