Garden scents

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I just walked out into my courtyard and thought that someone was baking! I have a nice patch of chocolate daisy by the entrance, and a vanilla-scented bee brush inside. They have finally gotten large enough to really produce enough scent to fill the area. It really is a lot of fun. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything that might go well with chocolate and vanilla? Anything with a cinnamon smell? :)

Talihina, OK

there is a cinnamon basil that is great

Sounds kind of tasty! My chocolate flowers have never really done much. They bloom but are relatively small. How are you growing yours? I have grown cinnamon basil and it does smell nice.

Mine are in full sun in quite sandy soil.

Arlington, TX

I think mine are in too much shade. The first year I had them in sun and in a fast draining bed but they seemed to suffer so I moved them to better soil and a little shade. Guess I should have given them a year to adjust. They are cute little plants but mine don't bloom when it gets really hot.

Mine didn't really take off until the second or third year.

First year crawl. second year leap. lousy last 2 years tho. I like the loquats, lemons and oranges in bloom, yummm. Sweet smell of phlox, and wisterias..

Arlington, TX

I have had mine for about 3 years. I am wondering if I should move them back.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Play safe and split em up?

Arlington, TX

Yes, I could try moving one and leave the other two where they are. They are blooming just not doing much growing.

I wouldn't call them bushy. They really sprawl, but do get a lot of flowers on them. They bloom all summer for me, in waves.

Arlington, TX

I'm going to take a pic of mine today and you can tell me if they look "normal".

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Guys, if I showed you a picture of mine you would have a good laugh, they are soooo puny, they are in pots and i can't decide where to put them.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Chuckl, give em room to grow and they will.

First year it sleeps, second year it creeps, third year it leaps!!!

Arlington, TX

LOL Not all plants leap or even creep. Some just barely hang on...

How about Heliotrope ~ smells like cherry pie???

Yum on the scented plants but I love fragrances. Citrus blooms, heirloom petunias, jasmines, old time Irises, summer Crinums. They are all wonderful. I have a local succulent, Manfreda virginica that has a summer bloom fragrance that will make your nose follow the scent.

But this spring what I have noticed is the delicate scent of herbs. Dill, Chervil, the small basils. I find it odd to be able to smell them without brushing against them.

Delightful ~ the sense of smell is one I wouldn't want to lose.
