Hi all! I travel once a year with my family to Georgia for a racing event. This year it will be in Commerce. So, I'm interested in any nurseries or unique garden centers to visit while in the area. Last year we visited Seasons nursery near Valdosta because that was near the races. So, new place for racing and need some suggestions for plant places. I look forward to your thoughts.

Nurseries or unique garden centers open to public
Have you been to the University of Georgia test gardens in Athens? http://ugatrial.hort.uga.edu/ I was pleasantly surprised to learn a local family acquaintance had created this setting http://gibbsgardens.com/tour.php I've not visited their garden but they are receiving a lot of positive press in local Atlanta papers.
I've never been there. Can you buy plants there or is it only a display garden?

Erin, I'm not sure if they have year around sales. They do have one or two big plant sales each year and the Spring one just happened. Perhaps if you contact them they will be able to give you names of nurseries in the area. Another source is the Hall County Master Gardner group. They sponsor a big annual sale that also just happened and have a lot of online info. They would be a good source for growers in the area.
Thanks! I do have some time to get it figured out. :)
When are you coming to Georgia?
October, I think it is.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden would probably knock your socks off but I don't know if you are wanting to stick to places with sale plants or what. This would entail a trip to the city center. They have the most amazing and diverse species orchid house in the country. It's huge. The grounds are season-scaped as well as exhibiting permanent plants. It's a half day excursion. The garden is located in the middle of the city and is an expensive venture. Parking is not free (about $6-8 dollars depending on how long you stay) and the admission is close to twenty dollars. We are members and go all the time. It's a beautiful place to stroll. Still, it's an expensive outing for non-members but worth doing once.
Edith's Daylilies http://www.edithsdaylilies.com/ is a neighbor close to where our cottage is located. She is quite famous for her lilies. Maybe you would be interested in a visit there.
I was thinking that was kind of pricey. I'll also have two four year olds and my mother (that has Parkinson's). So, not sure if the garden would work for them. It sounds awesome though. Mom would make the effort in spite of herself and probably be wiped out in no time. She doesn't like to let on that she has any kind of disability, even though she can't help it. I'll look into the daylily place. Thanks for the suggestions.
