Anyone know what this young tree is? I thought it was a catalpa, but now I'm not at all sure.

Looks like Redbud to me, too.

And to me as well.

If this is really a tree, I have about 15 more like them!!!

The wild ones can make a small tree or split and make several branches. I want one Smockette, all I have are dogwoods, chuckl

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

They are easy to grow from seed but they may not germinate the first year. I gathered some seed from an esplanade here if houston about 6 yrs ago. They all germinated. I had a lot of redbuds there for a while. I still have 2 more than I want but they are too big now to uproot.

Yeah. I just havent been woods roaming- @ the house I have dogwoods but no redbuds. Go figure...

Hmmm. It might be redbud--that was my second guess--but I did not see it cover itself with flowers like they usually do. It did bloom, though, and it wasn't a white flower like catalpas have. Do redbuds usually have this kind of spreading form if left unpruned? I've never grown one.

They have a lovely form and they dont bloom for several years, I'd say 3 years. The blooms are directly on the trunk and large branches not on stems of any kind. Those heart shaped leaves are a dead giveaway. It's redbud..

Well, we certainly will not dig it up then. Thanks!

Talihina, OK

Well lots of luck digging it up anyway just so you know if they are not where you will like them to be in the future get rid of them NOW They are a serious pest in my yard

I love Redbud trees, the heart shaped leaves and the pink blooms in spring. I have one and it just bloomed and was beautiful!

Well, it's not in my yard--it's in the middle of a bed at my friends' new house. We are making a butterfly/hummer bed out there, and we didn't know if it was something planted by the former owners, or a volunteer tree. If I had seen it bloom in the usual way, I would've recognized what it was, but it never did do that. I guess we'll leave it. I already have to dig up and move a formal yaupon out there, and I'm sure that's going to present all the digging problems I need.
