What's blooming and growing - April 2013
Just lovely Karen ^_^.
Those are georgeous, Karen!
So pretty Holly! Who is it?
Lynn
Don't have a name for them. I have two with those leaves one pink one purple. I bought them at a good local nursery you would think that a good nursery would have a name but they didn't. Only thing she could tell me was they get them from Canada. Next time I go I will try to talk to a buyer.
NOID or not,it's a beauty!
Very pretty Holly! I love variegated AVs.
My AV Cosmic Blast has absurd on it already... can't wait to see it bloom!
Karen.,girl you sure can grow streps,..they are beautiful.Neil's Twilight is awesome.
Hi Holly,I love your violet, dosn't need a name where there that pretty!
Karen, stunning plants! Holly your violet is just lovely!!
Lenny, I think this one is very nice! I love the high contrast speckled appearance!
Karen
I love it too Lenny! Reminds me of one I use to grow "Purple Peppered".
Lynn
Very nice Holly.
Lynn
It's very pretty Holly.
I think some of the most eye-catching AVs are the simple ones... I personally prefer the single flowers.
Pretty blooms. I've been busy repotting some of mine. Only have three or four young ones blooming for the first time. They don't have too many flowers yet. I'll have to take some pictures. Keep posting the pics. I enjoy seeing them all.
Eileen
I thought some of you might like to see what else I do with my spare time besides plants...

Thanks for looking!
Karen
Terrific pics Karen, thanks for sharing!!!!!
These are my very first Kohleria blooms and also a couple of blooming AV's:
1 & 2 is Kohleria Manchu
3 is Kohleria Lilla Guber
4 is AV Eskimo Kisses &
5 is AV Williwaw
I had never grown kohlerias before and this is the first time they are blooming for me. They are growing a little leggy so I think that next time I will need to pinch them back so they'll spread out more. They came from trades with other DG's members who continue to feed my addiction!
Chiqui
Great blooms Chiqui! Kohlerias are hard to resist, ain't they? so easy and rewarding. They do like to get tall but don't mind trimming. And multiply well too!
I just love those little fuzzy buds. So cute.
I love fuzzy buds too!
I am still waiting to see my first Kohleria blooms!
Beautiful pics Chiqui!
Karen
Great pictures Chiqui! I love the delicate coloring on AV Williwaw.
Lynn
Great pics, Chiqui. I have no luck with Kohleria or Streps. the Kohleria grow way too tall and end up bending over. Maybe next time I try them, I'll cut them back, like you said. Streps just die as soon as I pot up the babies. The babies are in a covered alum. tray and covered. I started them from leaves I received in a RR this past Spring or Fall. As soon as I put one in it's own pot: goodbye. It wilts and dies. I'm tired of trying. A few years back, there was a member here, GessieGail, who sent me over a dozen strep leaves. I had no luck with them once the leaves made babies, and were potted up. I think I'll stick to violets. LOL
Eileen
Thanks all for your comments.
Eileen, I also gave up on streps. I had lots of babies from leaf cuttings and they all seem to die when I repotted them. I think it is just too hot here for them. They seemed to do better in the winter but I just don't have the hang of it yet with them. I am doing better with the kohlerias and really like them a lot. It's hard to cut them back when they are growing to make them branch out more. I am not sure but I think you can pot up the cuttings and get a new plant. Maybe someone with more experience with kohlerias can answer this.
Chiqui
Nice pics everyone!! Spring is in the air (big grin) Yes, Chiqui, you can root the Kohleria cuttings. I have even rooted them with buds that continued to bloom while rooting. Probably shouldn't have but I did LOL!!
Connie
haven't been on for a while, Those strep flowers are Stunning! Love them.
Thanks Connie. Good to know. Now I won't feel so guilty when I cut them back

I took some photos of some of my blooming plants:
1. Rob's Shadow Magic, I just got this plant about a month ago and even though it is a semi-miniature, the bloom is the size of a standard AV.
2. Ma's Ching Dynasty, I was hoping for more yellow but this is the first time blooming so hopefull it will have more yellow as it continues to grow.
3. Tiger
4 . Kohleria Manchu, it continues to put out more and more blooms every day.
5. Rozovy Zhemchug, a new Russian for me with first time blooms.
Chiqui
Great pictures Chiqui! Do you find the Russians more difficult to grow?
Lynn
What a beautiful shade of pink that Rozovy Zhemchug is.
Lynn, I only began growing them a few months ago and they are just beginning to bloom for me. I have them mostly in an east window with just the natural light. Some say that they like low light conditions and grow them on the end of the plant stands. I am experimenting with them to see what works better in my own growing conditions but still too soon to tell.
Chiqui
I was curious, because they seem to give me foliage problems, probably too much light.
Lynn
Love your blooms Chiqui!
Beautiful blooms!
Very nice!
Very Nice!! I just got that ma's ching dynasty, i'm looking forward to growing it!! it has beautiful blooms.
