So a few years ago I planted some ornamental lamium - I don't remember the varieties but they are pretty with silvery foliage and pink, white and purple flowers. Last year I had a horrible problem with lamium the weed - it's in all my beds and in my yard. Could the seeds from the ornamental variety have reverted back to wild and caused this or is it just a coincidence? I don't know how to get rid of it in my beds as it's inter twined with my other ground covers now.
Lamium problems
The ornamental Lamiums and the two Lamium weeds are all separate species. Cultivars or hybrids of some plants may revert back to the basic species, but they do not change species. Which Lamium weed are you plagued with, L. purpureum (Purple Deadnettle) or L. amplexicule (Henbit) ?
It has a square stalk so I'm thinking it deadnettle, altho they look very similar.
Being members of the Mint family Labiatae, all Lamiums have square stems. If you can get a close-up side-shot of the upper portion of the plant, providing a high-confidence ID should be fairly easy.
Deadnettle should be very yellow and dying down by now. Lamium is past bloom but still very green (growing) and throwing our runners across the surface.
and Deadnettle is a horribly common weed around here. Follow up with pulling , and avoid digging that turns up seeds again. Use mulch by fall to cover the soil and prevent them from sprouting next winter.
