French Filet Beans

Kingsville, TX(Zone 9b)

Does anyone here have any experience growing the French Filet type green beans?
I want to try them, but I'm a bit concerned about growing them in this hot dry climate.
I'm in zone 9B, I think.
And is it too late to plant them now?
Are there any recommendations for particular variety of this type?

Also, I've noticed almost all the Texas posters are from the zone 8 area.
Anyone here from down here in the deep southern portion of the state?

Thanks!

Sorry ~ zone 8 and no experience with French Filet beans here.

There just isn't much 'vegetable growing' discussion on the Texas Gardening Forum. As a result, you might try posting this on the Vegetable Forum. There are some growers in your area over there and even some commercial growers from deep south Texas.

I suspect you could grow them easily but the growing seasons would be totally different. Good luck.

I grow them, both the bush and the pole varieties. Plant them when your soil temp is 65 degrees to 80 degrees. So now is good. They do well for me here. The trick is to catch be beans when they are young and no thicker than a pencil. This year I am growing Trionfo Violetto and Nickel (I almost always grow Nickel). In the past I've also grown Fortex and Maxibell and a couple of others. I just follow the directions given on the packet or in the Territorial Seed catalog (a very good resource even if you don't buy from them), lightly fertilize at planting, water regularly, and watch them grow. You can succession plant the bush varieties to get beans almost all summer. The pole varieties do well for me until the very hottest part of August. When it gets too hot for them they poop out. Just pull up the bushes/vines, feed them to the chickens, and plant more for the fall garden.

Callalilly is down near you. She usually posts on the Vegetable Gardening forum or the Market Grower's forum. I think there are a couple of others, but I run accross them on more on the Fruits and Nuts forum.
