Anyone recognize this onion-y plant?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

It's perennial here, clumping and smells strongly of onion.

I see you have little bulbs at the tips of the stems, I have some like that, they were given to me by an old friend who lived on a nearby farm.
She called them Multiplying Onions, but I don't know the scientific name.

Walking Onions ??

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Prob not the walking onion- multipliers or running onions are used as green onions or scallions in cooking...

I posted this on the ID forum as well and they ID'd as Allium canadense. One member sent an interesting link regarding it's use as food.

The bulbs and other parts are edible and cultivated by some as a food crop. See for more: http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Allium canaden...

Have they bloomed yet Marty? Reason I ask is that I have the purple and also one that starts out like yours. They are different plants intirely in my yard. The purple has smaller foliage and the white is much taller and thicker.
