Artichokes this year

Austin, TX

Last year I planted 12 artichokes into 3 medium sized pots and then thinned to one per pot when they sprouted. It seemed to take a long time. This year I am planning to transplant them into the ground in my back yard, with plans to eat the artichokes. They are definitely over growing the pots now.

Two other thoughts. I was thinking of planting some more in the front yard to let them bloom and am wondering if the deer will get them?

Also, I water them a couple times per week but have noticed that when it rains (instead of tap water) they really seem to flourish. Any reason ph? When they are in the ground is there something that I could supplement with the water to get the same benefit as fresh rain water?

I wish you the best luck with your Artichoke.
I have a thread started here with mine artichoke adventure:

I also hope that this year I will eat artichokes.

I think artichokes are a very messy plant compare to their cousin CARDOON which it is the "king" of the garden.
Stunning silver leaves and amazing blooms.

Good luck to you

If you want rain water you could install a rain barrel or two and use it for you favorite plants.

Need to check with your water company for what they put into the water- salt for softeners? Chlorides, flourides, after all-they must make water acceptable to permitted levels to keep down stuff like molds and mosses...
