I know it probably is a weed, but it's so frilly and pretty I sure don't want to pull it up if it isn't. I don't think I've seen any others in my flower bed since I've been weeding today.
Is this a weed?
It's either wild carrot or queen anne's lace depending - partly on opinion I suspect, and partly on how big and fluffy the flower is
I have a lot of those this year and they do have a tap root. I was thinking carot too but am not really sure.

I think it is Queen Anne's Lace a lovely wildflower introduced from Europe.
I thought those were weeds, I pull them. Oh no.
I am not sure but its certainly possible. Lovely maybe but somewhat invasive in a regular backyard.

Wow, you do learn something new on here all the time! Queen annes lace is sometimes called wild carot and apparently is the ancestor of the cultivated carot we eat. I left carots in the ground all summer last year, just for fun and that is what I thought had seeded all over my yard.
Look at this link:
http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/queen_annes_lace.htm
the ones in my yard are NOT queen anne's lace. They have a bloom an inch across at most, usually less, and seed like crazy. The chickens have sense enough not to eat them, they are poisonous.
However her picture LOOKS like queen anne's lace to me, the leaves are fluffier and taller and slightly lighter colored.
Do not eat wild carrot, it is toxic.
Mine looks more like hemlock which is deadly. Sources suggest wild carrot is edible (root not leaves) but is very similar to hemlock root which of course will kill you. I am pulling mine up, as I have been. Another site says that cultivated carrots come from a subspecies of queen annes lace. Botany can be messy.

Either way, it's obnoxious and I'd pull it out!
Good, thats what I've been doing for years.
Thanks all. Neither of the pics are my plant, But I'm pulling it up anyway, because it's right in front of my clematis.
I have tons of those come up every year, and I always yank them, I never let them get that big. Now I'm going to let 1 grow just to see.
Smell of it, still, be careful, caarrots have a stronger carrot smell, but wild carrot does too
