In like a lion in March of 13
Well, the roofer I hired started today, and I plan to fire him tomorrow as soon as I talk to an attorney. I never saw a carpenter that couldn't build something SQUARE, plus he lied to me 3X. Thankfully I've only given him a deposit of $300.
Here's the "before", and the partially finished "after" taken this afternoon... and which needs to be torn apart and done right. The metal roofing we plan to install over the whole roof will not expand and contract for out-of-square framing.
Nik Thanks for the new thread - been busy -
Yesterday spent most of the day yesterday (Freezing) tearing cabinets and counters out of a house that caught fire a couple of weeks ago so the older lady who lived there could start getting it rebuilt.
What happened - She was getting ready to go some where pulled her cell phone off the charger and stuck it in her purse - left the charger plugged in - while she was gone the charger set fire to her home.
Moral - If it is not actually being used UN-PLUG it.
What a bummer, Darius. I know how much you were looking forward to having a new metal roof without a hassle. Did the guy bring the proper tools or was he too lazy to use them?
We don't take the newspaper so I didn't read about your neighbor's house fire, Dyson, and am just glad you were able to help her. How bad is the damage and what all needs to be repaired and replaced other than her counters and cabinets? I had a small grease fire in our kitchen several years ago that I was able to put out fairly quickly. It's amazing what a few minutes fire damage can do.
As badly as I wanted to make the split pea, sausage, and barley soup, it'll have to wait. All the ingredients are on hand except for a hand full of pearled barley. There is none to be found around here in a 50 mile radius. Not even the Co-Op had it, Darius. Guess I'll resort to ordering it online. Nik, I hope you have thawed out by now and water is flowing.
The house is in Redwood (Golden View Road). From the outside you would not notice - Brick - but most of the sheet-rock, paneling, flooring etc will have to be replaced. I do not think there was any damage to the frame unless it was water damage will not know until the sheet-rock is removed - same with the wiring. Also many of the windows are broken.
Susan, the man had all the tools necessary, and a larger compressor than my pancake compressor (for the various nail guns). He is just a sloppy (as in down and dirty) carpenter.
I saw my attorney yesterday afternoon. His advice is to tell the man to come get his tools at a time I choose (within reason), and that any other visit to my property will result in prosecution for trespassing. I had to buy new "No Trespassing" signs on the way home as the old ones are in bad shape and not very visible anymore. Too snowy to get them put up today, though.
My attorney also said it would cost more in legal fees to get back the deposit I gave the roofer than the amount of the deposit, so just kiss it goodbye. He also said to be sure to actually see the state license and workman's comp. insurance policy from whomever I get to re-do and finish the job.
I put new padlocks on all the outbuildings yesterday except the workshop building inside the barn, and changed the doorknob on the freezer room on the back porch (where the ex-roofer has his tools stored) to a locking knob and deadbolt. It was raining too hard to reinforce the barn doors, which is needed before adding the heavy-duty hasp and padlock I bought, and it will probably be Saturday before I can comfortably work outside again.
I put up a nice long key holder in my office for all the various keys for the padlocks, riding mower, spare house and auto keys, etc. (and marked them!). I have a few unknown/unmarked keys, along with keys to houses of old renovation customers, plus friends and family in NC, FL and GA. My keys have never been so organized, LOL.
Darius, what a pain! I hope it all turns out to your satisfaction.
Dyson hope your neighbor can get some of the repairs done soon. sorry to hear of this. fire is so devestating. glad your their to help. :)
darius good luck on this . i know it can take such a toll on a person dealing with all the headache of a bad contractor.
this is how much snow we got. most likely it is a foot .
kids, dog and i had fun in it earlier today.
we may go back out again.
That's a lot of snow. Did you make snow creme? Last big snow here I put a bowl in the freezer so the boys can taste snow creme this summer. We are having some freezing rain and sleet now into tonight so we have cancelled church for tonight. I am under the weather from being damp and cold most of the day yesterday. Bad headache today I just can't shake.
We had the record snow for this part of Ohio with 10 inches yesterday morn. It took me 2 hours to get out of my driveway, and that was AFTER I had plowed it. It was like trying to drive on snot. finally put the car in neutral and chained it to the tractor and dragged it out to the road. It was a pain.
We had our first major hatch of the season yesterday. Most of the chicks and ducklings were drop shipped for Ideal Poultry in Texas.
My Greenhouse is not going to be finished in time for this years plants to be started. But my seeds that I ordered will be started by joseph Hostetler, One of my Neighbors. All the Amish seem to be putting in Greenhouses the last couple years.
The snow should all be melted off by tomorrow afternoon, so I can get the tractor's rake attachment and move all the gravel back into the driveway. I'm ready for spring.
I hate snow and I am so ready for spring. I planted a few more seeds last night. I have some cukes up pretty well now. Hoping to sell them at the plant sale and swap. Cold and dreary today. Got the animals here at the house fed. Still need to feed the horses but I have to wait for DH to get home. He went to the little country store to sit around and visit. I like to go too but I have 3 cold sores right now and they make me want to stay home and lay around. Waiting for Swamp People tonight. Fried some catfish and made potato salad for lunch. It was good. Might take a nap.
Get some lysine tablets for those cold sores!
Yesterday was busy at work. I had to catch 200 guineas and crate them up. I had help though, so busy or not it went smoothly. I took Debbie out for dinner last night. Her sewing lamp burned up, so we had to go to town to try and find her a new one. STAPLES closed!! I was shocked. I decided to make her a new lamp. I am still going to use the flex shaft from the old one, but I am putting in 4 hi intensity LEDs and a Battery pack in the base that will hold 3 AA batteries. I got the LEDs and some breadboard, but forgot to get a button switch. I already had the battery pack. I' think I'm going to post this little deal on Instructables just for the heck of it. Ah well, off to work...
We had a couple nice days in a row and I got a lot done. I planted a 10ft row of sugar Ann peas, 84 sweet yellow onion bulbs, 3 beds of lettuce; little gem cos, Prizehead and black seeded Simpson, put together 2 strawberry towers of 20 plants each, put one of my 2 greenhouses together and put down more cardboard in my melon patch. I have about half of it covered now. I cleaned out the hay shed and swept it out so I could put the new load of hay in. I put all the sweepings on top of the cardboard. My load of hay came Sunday after church. 100 bales and I helped unload and stack it . Day before yesterday I got on top of the hay shed roof and filled a few small holes that a fallen tree had put in it. Then I sealed around all the Windows in the horse trailer. Plants in the small greenhouse in the living room are doing pretty good.
Oh my! You have had a productive couple of days! I hope you didn't over-do.
Caj, I got tired just reading what you accomplished!
We had a couple of nice days here too, but I was off the mountain seeing my doctors at Wake Forest. The morning after I got back home we had snow, so it's just as well that I didn't get any garden work in...
The blood work I had on Monday show my red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin and platelets are all still below normal, although everything but the platelets (which dropped) actually improved a little bit over the last few weeks since my GI bleed and hospital stay.
It makes me wonder if I'll have the energy to put in a garden this year...
Darius, I sure you get straightened out. I hate that you have had so many health problems. I know how frustrating it is to want to accomplish so much and not be able to. I have lots of days like that so when I have a good day I try to make the very most of it.
Today was a good day. I was able to get all the feeding done, some more cardboard down in the melon patch, the plastic put back on the hoop house, the blankets back on the horses for this cold snap, some compost and soil mixed and a few pots of seeds put into the second greenhouse. I got it put together a couple days ago. Had to quit early because we had church tonight.
Likely won't get much done tomorrow. Steve has an appointment with a new endocrinologist. His kidney doctor has also referred him to a pain management doctor but he can't get in until August. He is in a lot of pain and I am praying they can get a handle on it.
Steve likes the new doc. She had to up his insulin by 25 units. He had him for about a month without insulin and the doc said she thinks he has developed a kind of toxicity because his sugar was up for that length of time. Now it will take bigger doses of insulin for a while to get it back down. The stress from all the pain and not sleeping is not helping his sugar level.
We are looking at snow showers for the next 3 days but hoping to get just about 3 inches. Would love to have less but hoping for no more than that. It has rained all day today. I tried to find a couple small electric heaters for my two greenhouses. If I heat them I won't have to worry about snow gathering on top and collapsing them. Was hoping to find a couple heaters on clearance sale but there were none to be had. Then I tried to borrow a couple but they were being used so I will just have to keep the snow knocked off the roofs.
Gonna hit the sack now. Hope you are all doing well.
Sue, a white winter is one thing, but a white spring is just plain obscene!
ain't this crazy ! way to long a winter for me. I have no idea who people do it in North Dakota or Minn ??? . i can't my easter decorations in the garden :(
lucy loves the snow. our lab is just a frolicing fool in the snow. never seen a dog love snow that much ? she thinks she is a malamute ?
Sue... dunno about those dog breeds, but my sister's part Australian Shepherd loves to frolic in the snow. He'll chose to stay outside in it, given the opportunity.
funny thing them dogs. LOL
well my turkey is sitting on eggs that will never hatch :( poor thing. I guess i have to go in and get her to snap out of it chickens are easy you dunk them in water but a turkey ? not easy to dunk in water LOL
still snowing we got another inch or so *sigh*
its making me grumpy this long winter
Snow is taking a break. Hope it is gone for good. I hung kerosene lanterns in each greenhouse and it worked to keep the snow melted off the roofs. I will be so glad when this cold weather is gone for good. I am so ready to garden, ride and camp with the boys. I need to get another tray of heirloom tomatoes sown in the indoor greenhouse to sell at the swap and sale in two weeks. I need to make myself get going. Not feeling too good today. My skeleton feels like it is collapsing on itself. I guess I am getting weaker. It is painful. I hope it is just temporary.
Caj, I'm sure most of us here (although few) feel your pain, and commiserate.
I wonder sometimes if I'll live out 2013, but I'd rather go quickly than some long, drawn-out affair.
I know God has a plan for me and I want to fulfill that but I hope it does not include a long span of weakness when I will be a burden on my family and be unproductive. I am ready for heaven when God is ready for me. Until then I want to keep working and helping others. It's a good feeling to help others.
Weather was nice today. Sunny and warmer. Got some bad news that has depressed us and we will have to figure out what to do about it. Life is hard.
Oh, no! You need some good news for a change.
I have about quit expecting anything good in life but I will surely take it if it comes my way.
Taynor wrote: our lab is just a frolicing fool in the snow. never seen a dog love snow that much ? she thinks she is a malamute ?
My Malamutes think they are labs since all we got was rain so everything is WET.
Turn about is fair play? :)
Some Mals can't stay out of the water -- very lab-ish in my mind. They won't stay out of horse troughs, ponds, puddles or lakes. Some Mals priss around damp grass like getting their toes wet will cause instant global nuclear armageddon. Gotta love 'em all.
hey everyone, Happy Resurrection Day! Boss has had me running all over creation this past couple weeks since we lost the guy who used to drive. This coming week I have my first overnight trip to western Va, the Shenandoah Valley. Money has been good, though.
I have spent the weekend running leaves through my chipper/shredder and spreading them on the garden. Next week I want to plant beets (yeck! Debbie likes them, though) Swiss Chard, turnips, spuds, radishes, lettuce, and Mangels. Not sure what else. I don't usually raise peas as they never make it to the house. I think it's still a mite early for onions.
2 winters ago my 2 shelties and the housecat (a tortoishell that started out on Guam) all layed in a pile outside in the open as the snow came down until they were buried under about 4 inches of the white stuff. None of them wanted to come into the house. Critters are like folks, they just do as they will as long as they can do it.
We had our first hatch this week, so now I have chicks in the living room. We sold some on CL but I need to get another add into the county classifieds. Next Saturday is big Auction day in DeGraff as all the old farmers clean out their barns and sell off all their stuff that you just can't find anymore. Flying kites later today if it doesn't rain. I love springtime!!
Caj- you should know you're still on my prayer list. you too Darius.
Nik i hope to get to the auction that day .
sending healing energy to both Caj and darius. sure hope things are moving along health wise for you
t he wasp are in full force at our house. they come inside . i found 15 yesterday upstairs. its annoying to say. kids finaly will take a swatter to them .
i taped up some of the windows to see if that is wear they are coming from ?
