New Member - new to Waco too!

Sylvania, GA(Zone 8b)

Hi all, I am a new (today) member of DG. I have lurked for a while a couple of years ago when I lived in Katy, tx. I have been to Mercer swaps and was an active member of the Houston Plant Exchange but we sold everything and moved to North Texas where we didn't own the land and couldn't plant anything. I missed gardening a lot!
Now I am in Waco for a few years and we have our own (very small) yard again so I am trying to get back into gardening. The challenge besides the very small yard is that my husband is a student and I am working part time so money for seeds and supplies comes from whatever we don't need to run the house and the cars and food....so basically nothing LOL. That is when I thought of DG. I remembered the RU and the Exchanges and thought I needed to get back to this site and make some new gardening friends.

I have no idea what grows here in Waco, or what zone we are even in at this point. I am going to do raised beds and put them in over the next few weeks as time and money allow. I love Tiger Lillies, canna's, veggies, and herbs as well as whatever will grow in the shade (since I have ever only had full sun plants) - oh and roses. For some reason I can grow roses no problem. They love me - good thing I love them :)

I hope to meet up with many of you and swap/exchange with all of you and thanks for letting me interact in your little corner of the world here on DG.

Welcome back! Waco zone is a half one- half Austin, half FW, chuckl. I have a few things that I can share, but don't get home til MAYBE April...Tomatoes, summer squash, cukes, herbs, sunflowers, we will all pitch in a bit here and there... not that I am volunteering anyone, it just works that way...

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Glad to meet you Angel. I lived in Waco many years ago and really liked it. There ar a couple RU's this spring, hope you can make at least one. One will be in Arlington and one will be in Hempstead at my farm. The folks on the TX list are some of the nicest on DG.

Thanks Guys! I love Waco too - just a different growing situation than I am used to...when it is dry it is very dry, when it is wet you are drowning LOL.

Joy I did see both of the RU's - I would love to come to your farm but it might be a bit far for me to drive for a one day trip. Arlington might be more doable. I am a farm girl at heart and love animals and just the whole farm living idea. I have always wanted to be a farmer haha - can't get my avionics engineering husband to concur at the moment though haha. When he is done playing with his planes, I will get my farm :)

I love all of the things you mentioned Kittriana so maybe I can do this after all hehe. I am going to start small this year. One bed of veggies and maybe one of shade plants and flowers for my puppies. They love smelling flowers and walking in the garden. They are farm puppies too LOL.

GFWaco, welcome to the forum again!

I am awash in tomato seed right now, so once you get set up post what you want/need and we can go from there. I would love to go to round ups, but business won't let me get away right now. But I am happy to mail seeds.

Good luck with you garden and may you have many happy days in Waco.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I lived in Waco for several years myself and the weather is much the same as up here. I worked for a Vet at that time, and he is still there and serves as a Representative in Austin too. Great vet if you need one, his name is Charles "Doc" Anderson and the clinic is Anderson Vet Hosp on Valley Mills.

Our RU is April 21st at 1pm....hope to meet you!

Sylvania, GA(Zone 8b)

Sheila_FW I am planning on being there at the RU! I am requesting the day off tomorrow to make sure. I am really overwhelmed right now with just trying to get my first bed in. I don't have much time since I only get one day a week off and it seems everyone else already has things growing here. I hope I am not too late getting it in. I am really excited about it.

terri_emory I would LOVE tomato seeds! I have never actually grown a tomato plant from seed but sounds doable. I can dmail you my address if you like. I don't have much to return but when I do your name is on the top of the list!

Angel ask for some tomato plants at RU, there are a few regulars that grow them every year. They start them by winter sowing.

GFWaco, welcome to our Garden!!!
We bought 6-pks last wk & now, my SO has decided he wants to put raised beds in our garden. Knowing that it was going to be a couple of wks b4 he gets the raised beds in, I bumped everything up into 2 liter bottles. I know I have Romas that I can share. They are already 4" tall & by RU, should be a foot or better. Will ck what others I have tomorrow & LYK.

Hi angel. I have some cucumber plants i could bring you. I'll start the seed now if you let me know you want them. I grow mine on my patio privacy fence. I also have purple basil and oregano that I could root for you if you say you want them.

Brazos Valley, TX

Hi Angel,
I'm back as well, used to live in houston and hang out here as manicreality... been through a whole lot in the past 5 years and trying to set up a little farm very little...anyway our land is recovering from the drought so for now i have much in pots , getting ready to build a food forest... thinking waco is pretty close and at the moment i could definately kick down any blue agave or cuttings from prickley pears...once spring hits i'll have flats of stuff....oh just remembered i did gather quite a few seeds from our white althea...so pretty it does well through the heat and the freezes and starting to bloom now and will through fall and looks like a place for a tropical wedding when its blooming. good to be back on here and getting in touch again...gardening feeds my soul

Lisa - I would love some if they can grow in shade. I only have on sunny part of my yard and that has to be reserved for herb and veggie gardening. I only have one other sunny spot that is tiny and can only have containers - that is where I want to plant a vine like Clementis.

Smockette - I would LOVE some Romas! Check my RU list and see if there is anything you want from it.

Steady Cam - wow! would love purple basil and oregano! Let me know your trades for RU as well. I don't have much yet but hey, as things grow...you know how it goes.

Thanks Everyone!

Angel
