Cryin' The Blues in Iowa.....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi,

What are we going to do??? This is my last brug that will give me bloom and fragrance until next summer. I'm already bored to tears. Hope some of you will have some late bloomers that you can post pictures of so we can feel there is still hope that we will get through the winter in Iowa.
I can't say I'm really happy with this brug, but it is still growing, even inside the house, with not a lot of light.

we're back up in to 80's again.. i need to take them all back outside.
i have a jessie noel blooming inside now and it smells heavenly. i was telling gloria that i may try to pollinate it and see if it will take..that would be just too cool.
cheer up brugie, before you know it, it will be spring , but then again im in the south and our winters are normally only 3 weeks long, lol

You guys are so lucky. I did pollinate a couple of these blooms with the only pollen I had available and it was Frosty Pink. I doubt that I get it to take, but if it does, it can't be a beautiful bloom. Just need to do some of this to keep my sanity. Hope you will be posting throughout the winter months. When I get home from surgery I'll be depending on DG to keep me entertained. I'm jealous of anyone who can keep the brugs growing. I don't think my hubby would be happy if I installed anymore grow type lights though. He says now that they hurt his eyes.

Brugie: I've got blooms starting to open on my Peaches and Cream, buds happening on Solid Gold ( and it's not very big), buds on one of the sanguineas so I'll post pictures when they open to keep your sanity through the winter. I think I will have lots bloooming all winter in the greenhouse.

Ms. Brugie, just came in from a moonlight stroll through the brugs, they look good in the moon light. i only have a couple of isabella blooms, ecuador pink has first open bloom, a couple of whites with a few blooms each, jutner orange just won't quit.... that would be my pick for you to try to grow a cutting into blooming size, one has been blooming since june, off and on. have dr seuss and grimaldi with a few blooms, they were babies this summer, put in the ground in august.... have a becca lynn with blooms, couple more i haven't seen bloom yet. praying for a winter like the year before last, no frost til the week of christmas, and light ones after that.....

I am starting to get jealous of you people who live in that warm southern climate:)

Question: Will the brugs keep growing and blooming in my living room....with no direct sunlight? Would be nice if they will....anyone tried this in the northern winters?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey Everyone,

I'm so jealous. Think I'm going to have to find another plant that blooms in the winter just to keep me going.

Arlene, I'm going to put my Jutner Orange under a good light and see what I can do with it over the next few months. I usually keep all my brug babies cut back due to lack of room, but I think I'll have to just squeeze a little extra room for at least one or two to continue growing. I'm so glad you are all able to keep them going either in your lawn or greenhouse. If I ever get that glass room attached to the house, I'll have some winter fun too. Amazing as it may seem, we are having Indian Summer with day time highs in the high sixties. Just too bad it took that hard freeze to get to this point.

Owen, maybe we better start working on a winter hardy brug for us northerners. I do have a small grow light on the white brug, but it isn't looking healthy like they do when outside. :-(

Brugcrazy, do you think I could grow those types of brugs that prefer the cooler temps here in Iowa? Someone has a few of them posted on the contest page and they are just beautiful.

Okay, getting wordy here. Thanks you guys, in advance, for helping me get through our winter.

Shirley,
When are you going in for surgery? How long will you be in the hospital?

Gloria,

You've got mail......

FSH, TX

How fragrant is it? Are those 6 points something it does on a consistent basis or only rarely...? I don't generally like whites myself. I do have a few white aurea's though.

Brugmansia,

This is the first time I've seen this one bloom and it has only opened up a couple of blooms so far. Should be another one open tonight. Will keep my eye on them to see if others open with six points. It has a nice fragrance, but not strong like some. Of course it is in the house, no breeze to blow the fragrance around, and with only one or two blooms open, it can't possibly smell like those with 30-40 blooms open at the same time.
Will let you know as time progresses.

Eric,

Sorry to say the third bloom only had 5 points. It doesn't look like it is going to open anymore blooms for a while. I suppose that bringing it into the house threw it into shock as it is dropping the smaller buds. It dropped the first bloom I pollinated too, so I guess I'll just have to wait for summer and hope I get some early blooms that can set pods that will hold.

Later......S
