I have a young apple tree that has a scraped trunk. Any suggestions on how to take care of it so it doesn't die?
Apple tree damage
Get some tree wound sealer and apply to the damaged areas.
It appears that some pruning is in order to grow a tree and not a giant bush. Unfortunately, the part that should remain is the damaged trunk. Also,Google bridge grafting as a way to repair damaged trunks. Just my 2 cents worth.
Thanks. I'll look it up.
Bridge grafting will help, but may be difficult to keep from drying out before the necessary healing growth takes place in the Spring. Well worth a try, but if there is another stretch of sound bark on the back side, the tree will probably survive and in a few years new growth will mostly cover the scars. It will slow the growth down, of course, but if space allows, give it time. I have seen trees survive being chewed on by horses as well as having some bark scraped off by Deer. Trees that have been totally girdled usually do die.
