Things that Make You Go Hmmmm!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

As I was touring the gardens today I noticed a few seedlings that I just had to stop and say, "Hmmm....wonder what that is??" LOL I just love this "unknown" time of the year.

The first two could be vegetable or flower (but not animal or mineral).

The last two are definitely flowers, but I have no idea what. Pic #3 was obviously in my garden last year, but beats me if I can remember what it is. (Getting older is not fun sometimes.)

It is the same in my garden ... I have some seeds that I can recognize and some that I look and wonder !!!

3 looks like prairie verbena, its a bit scrawny though. Could it be moss verbena?

I have learned to check "weeds" against the lawn. If I don't see it in the lawn I don't pull it, because I probably planted it and forgot. Getting older features "surprises". When suddenly I find my teacup, flowers, pruners, etc...

Based on what was where in the garden last year, I think #1 might be tomatillo seedlings, #2 is a sunflower seedling, #3 is some verbena I got at the RU last spring, and #4 I'm totally clueless on.

Yes, you got some prairie verbena from me. Thats what it is in # 3.

My Sunflowers look just like picture #2 ... right now they are germinating (volunteers)

Talihina, OK

#1 looks more like the sunflower to me Just a guess ya know

I think #4 is Cowpen Daisy but not sure yet.

Arlington, TX

Cowpen daisy is grayish and doesn't have wavy leaves?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think the leaves are the wrong shape for cowpen daisies. I'm thinking this might be either a frostweed or ironweed or just a weed that needs to go.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Not Frostweed or Ironweed, wait a while and let us see.

Might be something good. You can always pull it out if it turns out to be something hideous.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree, when in doubt leave 'em be. You can always pull it later, if need be.

Carla, did you check in on the swap thread?

Arlington, TX

Speaking of unknowns. Jo you gave me a small plant last year but I can't recall. Self heal maybe?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I did give you one Self Heal.

2 looks like sunflower to me

Speaking of seedlings, does caronlina phlox self seed? I have some seedlings that look a lot like it when it first starts to grow in spring. I will take a pic of it when time and weather permit.

Cheryl, I am sure it can selfseed, but I have never had it do it for me, probably because of my clay soil.
I have better luck with side shoots or the clump expanding.
It will be interesting to see.

Now I am curious. The only other plant I can think of it might be are Salvia azurea (sp?). They were both in the same area. I also wonder if maybe what I see are side shoots left in place after I moved the larger plants. Will need to get out and take a closer look.

I looked at plant profiles and they do match the leaves of newly emerging plants. Now I just need to check if they are seedlings. But, they are definately the phlox plants. Thats good because they are lovely and I will move them to another bed.
