Windows hanging up

At night when I shut down my computer my windows sign comes up "windows is shutting down" and it stays up. I have to manually turn off the power to shut down the puter. In the morning it takes forever to sign on because it goes through the scandisk for errors...It just started this 3 nights ago. What is going on..? Could the old puter have a virus? Thanks! Lisa
