Hummingbird migration is upon us. For those of us on the gulf coast, our first hummers should arrive either at the end of February or early March. So dust off your feeders - I put my feeders up today. We have had such a mild winter that some perennials are still blooming. My blooming hummingbird inventory includes lantana, various citrus, bottlebrush and red salvia. Attached are two pictures from last fall - a juvie male with his gorget beginning to show and a funny shot of a hummer tongue.
Cute photos gazergirl. Sounds like you have a great variety of plants to attract the hummers.
A pair of Rufous Hummers showed up here a week ago. First pics I've got.
There are 3 hummers here at this time. This one is the Boss.
A 4th hummer showed up today. An adult male Rufous.

This adult male Rufous has taken over as boss bird.....he runs off all the other hummers except this one (must be his significent other) I put up a second feeder, so he has to work twice as hard now.
I was at Garner State Park and Guadalupe River State Park in south Texas this past week and I saw many Black-chinned Hummers. When I got home to Fort Worth, TX, today, I also saw a male hummer, but I coudn't tell if it was a Black-chinned or a Ruby-throated Hummer.
Another adult male Rufous showed up, but the boss bird keeps running him off before I can get his pic.
The hummers are really active today.
This is a first....3 hummers drinking together and Boss bird didn't run them off.
Adel, those little jewels are adorable. I'd like to be where you are. No hummer here yet for us. Bit chilly still.

A really great zoome or were you extremely close ? ?
Combination of both.....I sit on the porch about six feet from the feeder and shoot with a fairly wide lens and then crop.
Just so those in our region can celebrate with me. I saw my very first Ruby-throat hummingbird today. A male, he was dodging a bee to get to the nectar. I was glad that I anticipated their arrival, thus have put out the nectar. Good thing I did because my honeysuckle are forming flowers, but they're not fully open for the birds yet. I'll find time to report this occurrence on Journey South. But my buddies here in DG are the first to know. :))

Lily_love, Congrtas on the new arrival!! ~ All thats blooming here is my evergreen climatis ( Tons of blooms though!) Phlox and Iris, do have my feeders out, Sure Hope to see one soon! Had them in on April 4th last year.
1st male rubythroat showed up at the kitchen feeder today. About a week later that last year. He won't be staying, just passing through. I don't get the ones who nest here until late June, early July.

Got my first hummer yesterday ...
Here they come! Congrats to everyone. My second sighting was over the weekend. Another male. I guess the males ventured out first, then the females will follow suit.
I am embarrassed that I started this thread, and haven't returned to comment. Adelbertcat, that is a gorgeous Rufous. I have personally only seen Ruby Throats. My first Hummer arrived on 3/26, fully a month after the first was reported on the gulf coast, on the hummingbird.net website. I was very impatient and it was a long month. But I now have several residents, one very fat female hogging the front feeder, a male claiming the bottlebrush in the back, and various others who are trying to get lucky. I have to say that the fat female, who I thought might be pregnant, is not around today. Perhaps she is incubating :-).

Oh mine, Ruby Throat hummingbird's incubating? Congratulations go to you gazergirl. Welcome back to the thread. A male RBT hummer just buzzed me a little bit ago in the garden. Hope he will become "resident" for other blooming flowers are strutting their stuffs. Oh bottlebrush in the back? I just planted a few young bottlebrush plants, it will be a while before they will bloom. gazergirl, how big should the plant gets before it starts to flower please.
Just got a couple photos of a hummingbird in the rain, Not the greatest pictures as it was getting dark ( Taken after 7pm) and it was raining out, But, I was able to get them ..

A few from today.
I recently visited the Hummer House in Christoval TX (south of San Angelo). This was my third visit, but the first time to be there when they were banding hummers. The area is a natural oasis on the Concho River and has a huge variety of birds including painted buntings and summer tanagers, but they have the states largest breeding population of black chinned hummingbirds. It was a great experience getting to see the birds up close.
