Shade Bloomers Needed

Axtell, TX

I've never had a shady patch in my yard, and now I've moved to a yard with very little sun, huge oak trees keep all the rays away. Since this is all new to me, I need someone's help. I've left behind 30 or more roses and cried all the way away from them. I cannot survive with only ferns, begonias and hostas!!! (Not that I don't like them, but enough is enough for this full-sun lady.) I'm in Houston, and just moved south one planting zone, so that won't be an issue, just the enormity of shade in my front yard. Please, bloomers for shade input. Books and such are nice, but gardeners are nicer.

esperanza, there are shorter varieties, sage, alliums, spider lillies, coral vine, ginger, herbs like basils, mother of thyme, lavenders, hmmm, pix not loading this morn. There are also var of roses that will do fine under the oaks...just look for ones that have different resistances.. You will appreciate the shade by June...

Hydrangeas love the shade in Texas.
Just make sure they will get enough water.

I can plant hydrangeas in a shady corner of my yard where the hose bib is? I have one tree nearby that gives dappled sunlight to this corner, but mostly it's damp.

I'd need a compact hydrangea variety. Would prefer blue, but I know the color has to do with the soil pH, so I could change that, to get blue.

Any compact variety suggestions would be appreciated.

I LOVE Hydrangeas!

You could also try Turk's Cap and Flame Acanthus, they do fine in the shade if it is not too deep.

Columbine does well in my back yard in the shade

Azaleas, bougainvillea love south Texas. Lorapetelums are all over Houston too.

Toad lilies, hellebores, sweet autumn clematis, columbines. My daylilies do okay in dappled shade. I love my Lady in Red hydrangea which gets no sun at all.
