Is this a topiaried vine or a vine that has taken over a tree?

Just the vine growing in a friend's garden.
To my knowledge it has not been shaped.

Wouldn't it be cool, though, if it had been trained up on its own trunk until it was strong enough to support it?!

It's popular to do that with wisteria here. I'm planning to try it with evergreen wisteria this season.

oh! I just noticed that the second pic in the right margin today ("The Bees and Me" http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2503/) is evergreen wisteria flowers.
