A friend says this is a leaf from a variegated fireman's cap . . . but i can't find it with DG search using that common name as a key
I would love to know it's binomial name. Please, anyone, help me out.

Google does indeed bring up many DG articles about it. Shame that DG doesn't have a search engine like Google. Once you have the botanical name then another search brings up so many more articles.

anyway, it is solved it is Erythrina variegata - - my thanks to those who actually gave a hand in identifying it.

The common name is in the link I provided - Coral Tree or Sunshine Tree.
The Zebra Plant is Aphelandra squarrosa.

Quick question: Are all the Erythrina species "THORNY"?
Buttoneer, I believe all Erythrina have thorns - I have to varieties and both have wicked thorns.
Thanks, Kay. I have one that is 2 foot tall and I have grown it for years. It is potbound and verry thorny. Think I will carefully try to repot it. It has lost all its leaves due to spider mites so I sprayed it & put it outside.
If you can use leather gloves, you should be o.k. in handling it. I have used rope and newspaper to handle mine. Thanks for reminding me - my potted one is desperate for a bigger pot.
