I live in South Central Kentucky and the Ruby Throated Hummers have been gone for about 2 to 3 weeks. But, three days ago I began seeing what I believe is only 1 back at the feeder I left out. It comes everyday several times. It is not a Ruby Throated. It has some orange on the breast and spots around the throat. I can't get a picture, but does anyone have any idea what it could be? As far as I know, the amateur bird watcher that I am, the Ruby Throated is the only hummer we have in this area. Migrating maybe from another part of the country? If so do they "stop off" on the way for several days?
Hummingbird Identification
Sounds like it could be a Rufous Hummingbird, the orange fits for that. Small numbers of them migrate into the eastern USA to spend the winter in the southeast, yours is likely to head on further southeast later in the autumn.
