Dear all.
I have this small shrub which a friend gave me but did not have a name (common or scientific). I recently planted it into the ground and it soon sent out flowers. It's about 2.5 ft. hifh with several branches starting low down.; large dark green leaves. I am attaching 2 photos for information. I would really like to have an ID. Many thks.
George de Verteuil - In Trinidad, 12 deg north, average temp about 33deg C day/25Deg C night, lots os rain!
Plant ID please
The plant looks as though its in the 'ginger' family.
No! It's definitely not a ginger. I grow lots of the latter and the leaves and form of the plant are so differtent. Thanks for your input. I hope that someone else can help.
George.
Thank you Metrosideros. I think that you got it right (partly so, anyway). It surely must be a Sanchezia, but I am not so sure of the species. The infloresence internodes of my plant seem shorter and flowers have not yet emerged between bracts. Maybe I am too impatient and they will show in time. Incidently, since its publication on the WWW about 2 years ago, I always check "The Plant List" website for latest accepted name. It seems that S. noblis has been reduced to synonymy for S. oblongata.
I will post more pictures as the inflorescence develops.
Yes, please show the flowers and mature bracts.
OK, about 5 weeks later, here are acouple of photos showing the flowers and more extended bracts. Is it a form of S. oblongata? It's a big plant (think it will be a shrub soon!), Leaves are very large -8" long by 5-6" wide. Stems alout 3/4" thick. This species seems to be very variable based on the photos I saw on Google. Further comments much appreciated.
PS. very readily propagated from cuttings.
George.
Has anyone confirmed this as Sanchezia? If yes, any idea what species it is?
Thks, George
It is certainly a Sanchesia.

Maybe a type of Sanchesia oblonga; http://images.google.co.uk/search?q=%22Sanchezia+oblonga%22&biw=1024&bih=629&sei=uTDnULyaB4XQkgXkyoCYAg&tbm=isch
But not sure about the species as there is not much information available, except for a few species.
