tree to plant comparable to Chinese Pistachio

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, this is a question from DH. He is looking for a fairly fast growing tree with some fall color, will provide some shade in the summer, drought tolerant, and maybe a fruit or nut for the birds. Someone recommended the Chinese Pistachio but I went on Plant Files and talked him out of it. We need a good alternative. Maybe a Texas Mission Almond Tree? Can't find that one on Plant Files. What are your thoughts? All suggestions welcome!

You might try a Western Soapberry http://wildflower.org/gallery/result.php?id_image=24483

I took out a chinese pistache so I will be interested in the suggestions too.

I think I do have a few spots for Western Soapberry. Thank you.

What about Serviceberry "Autumn Brilliance"? I've been wanting to get some serviceberries around for the birds. Or Chitalpa CHITALPA 'PINK DAWN'? Those flowers look good.....

Those two you mentioned would be good.

Cool! DH likes the idea of the serviceberry mentioned above as he loves having the birds around. And I thought the other one might attract hummingbirds...

bannana18, we might have some alternatives already!

I have been reading about Serviceberry...some sites have it in lower zones. Would it be ok in a sunny xeriscape bed?
