I have a clump of spiral ginger that has never bloomed. after doing some research i found that they will not bloom if they froze the year before. here in the south, we always have at least enough frost to kill back the tropicals.
if i dug them now while they are still green and healthy, will they bloom next year if i bring them inside?
i dont know exactly which one it is. i got it in a trade and it was only labeled spiral, and since ive never seen the flower, i cant id it that way either.
if any one knows, please help

Spiral Ginger
MSJen your ginger will indeed bloom if you have a green house to put it in. Is your ginger varigated or one color? Most of the gingers that are tall bloomer bloom on last years growth, so a warm greenhouse would work!
The spiral ginger that I have makes a large red bloom that resembles the seed pod from a magnolia tree, yellow flowers come out between the red just like the seed would in a magnolia seed cone not a pod.
Jen,
my son lives in San Jose, Calif., last x-mas he sent for me to come & visit him... the temp at the time was somewhere between 30ish to 40 degs. i've seen different kinds of ginger plants on most homes we visited. in fact, most homes have gingers & brugs on their yard - all growing nicely in the cold/windy wintery weather.
when i used to lived in Los Angeles, i had all kinds of ginger plants that i left outside all year round. some did perished during the cold weather. i cut down the above growth, to about 6" above the rhyzomes, left them on the ground where they were planted. they do come back nicely with more new growth and flowered nicely the following summer. during the wintery months, do not over water, water only not allow the rhizome to dry out.
some observation... ginger flowers do come up on new growths. i cut down the growths after flowering, allowing even more new growth to come up on the same season.
early this spring, some wonderful people sent & shared some of their ginger plant with me. i have them all planted outside under the canopy of a juniper tree. although i live in zone 8, last winter we hit low at 15 degs. i am taking my chances and see what will happen. i do not have a green house, so we will see. will keep u posted, as this is the 1st time i am planting ginger in this environment... ma vie
