I would encourage anyone to try a cactus bed. It has been so rewarding. I am debating about whether I will cover it to protect against winter wet and ice. If I had been more careful I would not have planted species that couldn't take our winters. Most of the species in this bed should be able to without aid.

How pretty! Did you use soil under the gravel?
Very little, I used some cheap sandy topsoil and mostly sand and gravel mixed.
On my "to do" list now!
Do you get a lot of rain? (compared to me) If so you probably need to find species that can tolerate a little more moisture, especially in the cooler months of the year.

We don't get rain too often, just deluges when it does rain!
