We saw this larva on a bush in our garden on the Greek island of Crete in October 2009. Haven't seen another since. Some species of Hawk Moth?
The false "eyes" were the most brilliant aquamarine blue and appeared only when the creature was disturbed. Otherwise they were hidden within a skin fold.
I held my finger close so you could judge the size.
