I'm guessing this is a juvenile Crowned Heron, but is it a Yellow-Crowned or Black-Crowned. In my guides, they are so similar. Anyone know
how to tell? Both are common in coastal S. Carolina, where I took this shot this morning.
Thanks!
CLOSED: Black or Yellow Crowned Heron?
Subadult (1 year old) Yellow-crowned; note the white fringes on the mantle feathers, Black-crowned has uniform brownish-grey at this age. The black throat (white in B-c) is also starting to show.
Resin
Thank you, Resin. My field guide was vague about the difference in the markings. I'm making note of yours for future reference.
Much appreciated!
