TROMBONE ZUCHINNI 2012

i am pretty sure some of y'all will remember the old thread we had a few years ago about worst garden mistakes This is 2012 version of the same spot and same trombone zuchinni which someone here described as rampaging Zuchinni ..As it turns out I am very fond of this crazy thing it is just a lot of fun to grow and to see the look on peoples face when they first see this monster now if I can only manage to upload some pix we will be set each pix is the same basic picture only closer the third shows the size of the squash

Yes I remember the thread, it sure looks like your zuchinni is up to the same tricks, is it edible?

yes very edible but like any squash it needs to be picked while young and tender but for other uses like making some zuchinni bread it is very useful as it only takes one also it will keep well into the winter and used as any winter squash

I love these, it's been a good year here, too.
We eat our fill fresh and give lots of it away. Winter squash gets saved for pie, ravioli, bisques, soups, stews, and baked. I didn't get sweet potatoes to grow this year, so I'm grateful for the extra squash. None of it will go to waste, but I can see how these would be a bit 'too much' for the average household.

Edited: I don't stuff these when baking.

Grits, you all must have gotten some good rains up there - so glad to know it has rained somewhere! Texas seems to be drying up....

We have had some nice rains but now it is back to hot and dry 106° here today...the flower bed i am doing for the city is really starting to look kinda nice but the the mayor is sponsering that project so i have the water system on a 2x per day timer one of which is at midnight so noone knows about that one but me

Anyone ever scoop out that zucchini and stuff it? Like....a stuffed mushroom, or meat loaf baked in a zucchini shell? I used to do that years ago, before I married a one-man zucchini hater.

I haven't stuffed these.
We eat them young, right before or after pollination. The seeds form on the bulb end of the squash, the rest is all flesh..nothing to scoop out.
I have some young trombocchini squash an the bottom of the first photo, mature squash in the second. I do love stuffed zucchini, but other varieties do better with stuffing.

Grits, you grow any other winter squash cultivars?

I have spagetti squash and a delacata and not real happy with either as is the case with most winter squash they tend to creep,crawl and spread all over and the trombone sure does not need any help with that..

I always hear such great things about delicata, tho, do you like eating it? I keep meaning to try it myself, but there are so many squashes, so little time :0) I love them all. I wish I could live in a cooler climate for just one summer. I'd grow a field of winter squash!

Oh, I see what you mean, wrong shape to stuff, of course, sorry.

Hmmmm Actually all of the seeds are in the large bulbous end ,I guess you could scoop out that end and stuff,i baked some 2 yrs ago and covered with a pineapple/orange mixture and they were just fair ..Bear in mind that I cook with the needs of a diabetic (DW) in mind but she would not even touch it LOL

I love this squash.
I did grow it last year. It died this year and I miss it!
I was able to make the "sweetest" squash soup I ever made !

Cmon now don't be teasing us with the squash soup unless you are going to share the recipe..I love this goofy trombone squash I save lots of seed and these I share ,every year I take some to a gardening class and share with all that take the class is a selfish thing really just trying to get everyone to try new things ..I wont know how this has played out until we start our Fall Gardening class which will begin soon ..

Just a little update on the Trombones it has now reached 27 feet from point of origin and is loaded with squash ,I made the pie just like a sweet potato pie only with a little more Splenda as the squash is not as sweet as the sweet taters

Well Jo DW really liked it me not so much I am allergic to Cinnamon so just put a tiny bit in it but even so I had a slight reaction so just had a small piece

Have you tried eating the blossoms from this? It must get a lot!

Wash them and make sure there are no bugs hiding inside, then make a light paste of water, flour, salt & pepper in a bowl, dip the flowers in enough to coat them lightly, sauté in olive oil until they turn golden. Some people stuff them with cream cheese but I prefer them plain. Even my daughter who detests zucchini loves these.

All my zucchini plants died with the heat we got!!!! I love to make zucchini relish!!!!

The bugs got all of mine but I've just replanted a couple for Fall.

I haven't decided yet if I will or just try the local Farmer's market :0)

no such thing as a bug proof squash but the trombone comes closer than anything I have tried

Boy, does that sound appealling! Do you think you might have a few extra seeds for next Spring?

I have a lot of leftover seeds but will be drying a lot of seeds inthe next few days so will have lots to share..
