I am thinking about moving a ginger thats about 3'x3' that is being crowded by my canna's. can I cut the foliage back or just dig the roots and all to move it

Pete,
Probably best to trim back, at least maybe a 1/3 of the plant.. or wait for the 1st frost to nip them and trim dead or damaged stalks..If you just wanna move part of them, cut deep with a sharp spade and dig up a good clump, or just dig the whole thing after trimming the foliage..I am in zone 8, and moving never hurts them for me..
