I found these onions at my local nursery already planted in little pots. I have no idea what kind they are. Will they continue to grow and get big ? I know it is a dumb question but I have never grown onions before except for the bunches of individual ones I get at the nursery. I was told by a neighbor to remove as much soil from around them as possible without disturbing the root and they should get big. They were planted mid May. Thanks for any advice.
Onions need to be set 4" to 6" apart to form a good bulb.
So even though these were in the 3 inch pots, I should have divided them? What to do now?
Phyllis - Yes, they should have been divided. Maybe someone in your same growing zone will be able to tell you if dividing them now will work.

I planted mine on March 14th here in zone 7b. I still have a few in the garden to harvest, but most of them have already been pulled.
They are looking good for being as crowded as they are. They are bulbing nicely but will not ever get very big. They will be good either as green onions, or if you decide to let them mature, Pearl onions. Folks who grow pearl onions deliberately plant them at high density.

A site I found about growing onions recommended planting them in clusters of four, so that's what I've done. I'd never grown onions from seed before so I'm curious to see how they come out. These are Cevennes, a French variety that's supposed to be a good keeper. We grew Stuttgarts from slips last year, but those I planted singly.
