Help! Armadillos are destroying my Garden

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Any suggestions on how keep armadillos out of my garden? They've gotten to the point where they're not even scared of people. My kids have started naming them. By the way, the one in the photo is Bob the fearless. He always shows up with his twin Ray the garden slayer. My garden is being torn up, my yard has holes all over and my dogs are jealous of the attention our new "pets" are getting.

Oh Boy!!! I don't know what to tell you, but it doesn't look good.

My goodness! I haven't had any of Bobs type only skunks. As I write this I am waiting for animal control to come and pick up a skunk I trapped last night. I broke down and bought a trap after my dog got sprayed the second time. You might have to call someone to set some traps or try it yourself. Critters are cute until they damage your property. Good luck with them and I hope you find a permanent solution.

first I have a quetion is you yard fenced if so locate where they are entering then place a live trap at the spot they enter most animal controls will loan the trap but some have rules against actually placing the trap on private property..Fairly easy to trap and to release

Multiple traps..........and relocation!

It is not fenced. I can try a trap. Any suggestions on bait? Thanks :-)

They are rooting for worms and grubs so anything that would suggest worm smell might work

Try a Have-a-Heart trap and relocate the garden slayers. If you lay 2x4s (sitting on the 2" side) from where you think they're coming from to the trap you can get them in easily. They kind of bounce along the boards and don't walk over them. Dried meal worms, usually found at feed stores as chicken treats, should work for bait. I had a couple who left a path of destruction and this worked for me. Good luck!

Do need to get them gone, they can damage foundations, my personal favorite is more humane to me than them, involves outside of city limit critter control, can kill what causes damage to ppl and property- they are known to carry leprosy, and rabies! Other than that my dog tries to chew em in 2 once caught- they can move pretty fast and hurt you with those claws if you try to catch them with bare hands...

Siggy, I have THE answer to your armadillo problem, and it's so easy. Caster Oil. Mix in your sprayer at 2 oz oil to a gallon of water, and just spray the grass. It's good for 6 weeks, and then you have to repeat.

We live out in the country, and some years have the armadillo problem. It's never failed. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure we ever sprayed in the flower beds. Grits is right. They're looking for grubs, and my beds were well treated for grubs, so they mainly focused on our yard.

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner, because I know the damage they can do in a short amount of time.

now there you go Sylvia I use castor oil for a variety of ailments but never heard of it being used for an armadillo repelant> thanks !!!!! Hey the old ways weren't all bad...

My nephew that grows watermelons in louisiana sprays Malathion around his melon patch as a deer repelant says they simply cannot abide the odor..just sprays a line around the perimeter and non on the plants

I hadn't thought of the grub thing. Every time I see Bob, he seems to eating earth worms. What's the best way to treat for grubs?

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

Beneficial nematodes. I buy them from Arbico-organics.com.

Dallas, TX

Boy they were all over N Dallas when I first moved out there. Poor things:( They were developing the land out there and you found them all busted up on Monfort lane. I wanted to clean them up and sell them as artifacts. They are about to become extinct.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Siggy, did you try the Castor Oil yet?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, Trust me they are not about go extinct. My garden is though.
