We have these beautiful woodpeckers that hang out in our back yard, and I photograph them often. I decided to see what genus(s) this particular bird is, and couldn't find any images that matched up to the shots I've taken. My husband calls them flickers, and he knows as much about these things as I do. Here are a few photos. My thanks to anyone who can enlighten me.
CLOSED: Woodpecker? Flicker? Confused
This is a Northern Flicker, the Red-shafted subspecies. The one with the red mustache is the male.
We have the Yellow-shafted ones here with the males having a black mustache.
Thank you kindly! It's just silly to spend so many years not knowing what I'm photographing. I have an almost obsessively large collection of red-shafted Northern flicker photos, and it's nice to have an accurate name for them. I'll mark this as closed.
Ditto; just to add that flickers are woodpeckers ;-)

What a beautiful bird! Images are soooo good.
Thanks for the compliment. An incredibly expensive camera can do wonders for one's "skills"
