It looks like some type of Mallow.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

Okra.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

When Okra is young, it still has that rounded leaf form. Some varieties keep it and some switch to the traditional form. I bet it is a young Okra.

This is a red variety but you get the idea.

The flower doesn't look like okra, but the picture is not very clear.

I think it might be Devi's Claw check it out

I think you might be right, based on what I can see of the flower. Take another pic of the flower, a close up. I don't think it looks right for okra either. Devil's claw would be cool to have.

Oh, how I hope it's Devil's Claw. Josephine that brought such a smile to face! I haven't thought about them in years! We had them growing in West Texas, As kids, we would hook the claws around our ankles, or chase each other around with them. The childhood folklore was that if you passed the plant, alone, at night. The plant would grab you by the ankles and drag you to hell. Ahhh, childhood memories and how we would scare ourselves stupid. good times :0)

I don't really don't remember what the plant itself looked like, I was probably too scared to go near it.lol

Definitely not okra. Wrong kind of flowers.

The man that sent the pic to me has grown Okra all his life so he knows okra/// he went on a hunting to west Texas last year so maybe a hitchhiker???? that makes the Devil's Claw very plausable...what ever I will get him this info and he will get me a better pic

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It will be fun to find out what it is.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

It looks like Devil's Claw to me too. My grandmother had these & I loved them!

Talihina, OK

Thanks for all the info now I have somewhere to point him ,he lives in central Louisiana so it could be just another weed // Right????

Talihina, OK

I just now got a chance to talk to the man that sent me the pic he said that after he returned from his west Texas hunting trip last fall he washed his ATV and it was very close to the spot that Devil's Claw is growing and he has promiced a better pic tomorrow ..

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree on the Devil's Claw.
Coco....Funny about grabbing the ankles! I opened the link on DG that Josephine gave and looked at all the pictures and saw where someone had put one of them crafted as roosters!! Reminds me of when Mother sold crafts for extra money and made them into Texas size mosquitoes, complete with a cowboy hat and saddle! Wish I had a picture of those....only memories now.

That is pretty cute Sheila, I guess your Mom is very creative.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

My grandmother painted them into peacocks. She ran lace between the "claw", put glue blobs then poured green & blue glitter onto the glue. This post really brought back fond memories! I'd love some seed if anyone has some. :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The mosquito had the head with claws up for wings and two turned down for the body and legs...quite clever. The clothes were felt pieces.

Funny, the bloom kind of has the shape of the pod. Never noticed that before.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Very pretty bloom.

I guess this means that it really is a devils claw since no one said otherwise ,i likely have seen one of these but if so I do not remember it..
