Kathleen's heifers have reminded me of a nightmare show day I spent with a recalcitrant heifer.
I was working with a Jersey herd at the time and the show had gone great. We had walked off with a large portion of the Jersey tropies and when it came to Supreme Dairy we were just pipped at the post. The winner was not best pleased at the thought his Holstien was so very nearly 2nd and made no bones about it.
All that was fine, it was a beautiful sunny day, large crowds and a nice gentle breeze.
Then came the Grand Parade, Boss took our nearly Supreme cow and gave me the heifer she was a little trouble with leading in the previous classes.
Well the heifer at this time had enough of standing about in her stall and excited at going out, she decided to take Baa on a merry dance. The only way I could hold her was by walking her round in tight little circles all around the ring. The crowd loved it!
Holstein man was making snide remarks about women in Agriculture, so I asked him to hold her since he was so big and strong. Red in the face he said NO and spoke no more about it. Hah!
By now heifer was on her knees, rubbing my sides and fishtailing to try and get me off. The band were even playing an impromptu theme tune to the Lone Ranger and the commentator was laughing too. Everyone thought it was too funny to help me out!!! The commentator did let us go a little earlier and heifer nearly landed up in the crowd on the way back she was so excited.
Oh well at least some people got a good laugh out of it and of course it was good advertising for the farm too LOL
