Hey,
What kind of bird is this? It is common in Somerset, KY and I call it a police bird because to my it's call sounds like a police siren.
It's not a good picture. It's on the branch in the pine tree in Big South Fork National Recreation Area.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Andy
CLOSED: Police Bird
Sorry, the pic's not good enough to tell!
Resin
I just recognized it and I'm a bit surprised. Every other time I've seen a cardinal sing it's been a male cardinal and not this song.
This is a female cardinal. And cardinals sing this 'police siren' pretty frequently around Kentucky. I am used to hearing the song cardinals (male) that I've seen singing say 'pretty, pretty, pretty'.
I am used to seeing female cardinals closer up and with more of an olive green complexion.
Does anybody else agree that this is a female cardinal? Do they have a seperate song from the males?
It's a cardinal.
I just listened to this video on YouTube and the second bird to respond to the cardinal in this picture is the 'police siren' song I was talking about.

I didn't know cardinals had such this many variant songs / chats.
The other day I read that Cardinals have about 16 different calls. Their songs and calls have been a little varied this year, so we've been thrown off a time or two.
