I've just noticed these and they look pretty bad. Each opening is at least 2-3 inches wide. I know that it's not a woodpecker. Can borers make holes this big? I lost a very old Post Oak to those a couple of years ago & would hate to lose this old guy. I think it's a Hackberry. The second image is of the tree which doesn't show any signs of distress, yet.
I'm sorry. I still haven't figured out how to flip the photos!

Anyone Know What Is Causing These Holes In My Tree?
Sweetmommy,
I've gone to my local Texas Forest Service office for help. They are very helpful. Contact your local office. There is a Texas Forest Service office in Houston.
On the following link, click on the dot over Houston for the location and contact number

I'm sure they will be able to help you with your problem. Losing trees is always sad. Just in the last year alone, we have lost 4 very old (trunk diameter of over 4") live oak trees here on the ranch — 2 to powerful downdrafts and 2 to last year's drought — in addition to countless other species of trees. I hope you have success in saving you tree.
Thank you bettydee! I'll try them. I never have much luck with my local Extension Service.
Texas Forest Service is not part of the Extension Service. It's a separate entity.
I know, that's why I'm so happy to have another source! Thank you!!
