New to Daves, so saying hello!

Austin, TX

Hello everyone,

I came to Dave's last year but never ended up doing anything with it, but now that I've got some pretty decent gardens, I have more motivation to hang out. :) I'm in Red Rock (SW of Austin) and have a small 5 acre homestead where we do all sorts of sustainability projects. I've got a 2.7 kilowatt solar array, 2 wells of which one is now off-grid, rainwater collection, bee hive, chickens, goats, turkeys, rabbits (almost here), lots of different types of gardens including standard, raised bed, wicking beds, aquaponics (in process) and a hugleculture (in process) and a small (new) orchard with plums, pears, peaches, apples, pomegranates, persimmons, and I'm forgetting a couple. :) We are almost done with our grey-water oasis as well. (I know I'm forgetting some things.)

In the gardens, I've got 3 sisters, square foot garden, tea gardens, herb gardens, blueberries, grapes, lots of heirloom everything (especially tomatoes), corn, and a bunch of different fruits and veggies. I've had small gardens in the past, mostly tomatoes, so this is my first foray into 'real' gardening and I'm pretty happy with things so far (although still overwhelmed at times).

If anyone is curious, I have lots of pics up on Facebook if you search 'BBQ and Bullets Homestead'. :) I hope to meet some new friends!

Oh, and a quick question: I've got a pretty good-sized mint garden, and most of them are doing fabulously, but all of a sudden my chocolate mint has taken a turn for the worse. I'm attaching a pic of it right next to my spearmint. It used to be just as large and lush as the spearmint and in 2-3 weeks it has gone downhill. All the others surrounding it are fine. Any thoughts? Thanks everyone!

Welcome! You have some great projects. My mint in a pot that I have had > 10 years suddenly got brown . I can see that some new leaves were starting so I cut it back.I can't offer you any suggestions except to check the watering and soil.
What is 3 sisters?

HI AustinSerenity ~ welcome to the Texas forum. I am impressed and interested in some facets of your activities. I just don't do FB very often and then only for kiddos.

If you are interested, Daves has forums for Sustainability, Homesteading, Vegetables, Herbs, etc. also. Hope to see you around the garden. Kristi

Hi there. A "real garden" can be one pot on a windowsill, or just having read The Secret Garden--it's more a state of mind. I agree with Digger; your projects sound exhausting. (If I sound defensive it's because we just signed a 2 year lease for a rental house where we agreed to "maintain the lawn," which means to me that we can't dig it up. It will be all containers all the time as of Monday.)

But hey, we're glad you decided to come hang out!

Carrie....If you have a patio or a bare dirt space in your yard, you could build an above ground planter like those austinserenity has.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Gotta check his facebook page...and my husband's schedule for doing MY projects. Our patio is about 4' x 4'. I'm not sure about backyard space that wouldn't be ruined.

Other than my daddy and son , I don't get exposed to many men in the garden . I had an ex tell me a shovel didn't fit his hands . (Could be another reason he's an ex ) LOL

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I knew a guy like that once; it wasn't that he was careless with my tools, it was that they were "too weak."

Dahlonega, GA

I can relate

Beautiful, beautiful.

Remember when we were new to Facebook and we were afraid to share our FB name with people we didn't know well, or we were SUPPOSED to be afraid? My older daughter, when she went off to college, said "no, I will NOT answer emails, only FB messages." That's why I joined FB.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

Haha, carrielamont! My daughter says that email is "too slow"!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

How old is she, sweetmommy? The daughter I mentioned is now 21. (Somebody told me it said in the news or "the news" that kids are getting sick of FaceBook, but I haven't noticed it.)
