I do not believe that I have ever seen this happen in the DFW area. This is spectacular, but I will be sad to see this agave go. It has been a landmark since I moved to Grapevine, and the owners decorate it for Christmas. Hopefully they will planting a replacement.
You don't see this often around here...
They are some amazing flower stalks. I have only seen them in San Antionio. My blue agave has been potted for years and I think that aids in slowing down maturity/flowering. How big is the plant?
That is really gorgeous, we had a volunteer one that bloomed where we had our business and it was at least 25 feet tall.
They are amazing plants, and they usually leave pups before they go to the big garden in the sky.
The one in my garden has a few pups but is a long way from blooming yet.
I saw one these on the back street, it stopped me dead in my tracks! But I never saw the Agave it was coming out of. How long does it take to get that big? I am going to take a picture, its an awesome plant!
It is probably 20 feet tall or so. I has been there (and large) for the 10 years that I have lived in Grapevine. If anyone is in the Grapevine area then it is on the corner of Pool and Blueberry, if you want to see for yourself.
I know exactly which one you are talking about! I didn't know it had a flowerstalk. I will go by soon.
I saw one recently in Austin in front of the Whole Foods on Lamar...maybe more common there but also fantastic.
Wow -- that picture makes me think of Big Bend! What a beauty!

Saw one of these outside Brenham and nearly drove the car off the road. Thanks for the ID -- I was calling it the Dr. Seuss tree!
They are other worldly blooms. So sad it marks the end for the plant though. Most blue agave are pretty good at offsetting so there are likely offspring around it. If they plant a replacement take a pic for us.
