After absolutely hating the parsnip, rutabaga and salsify, I was braced to hate the kohlrabi. I really like it! It tastes like broccoli stems, or peppery cabbage. Even the picky boyfriend snacked on it raw. It also performed well despite something eating the leaves into lace over the past couple of months.
Another good surprise for me was trying some white salad turnips a few years ago. They were the mild creamy radish I had been unsuccessfully looking for. I've been growing "Hakurei" turnips ever since. I did try growing regular turnips... yep, still hate those.
What have been some vegetable surprises for you and your family?
Vegetable surprises!
Well I'll say this and then I'll duck,(if this was live anyway) For years I was a squash type melon hater and I still can't eat zuchini. I've gotten as far as honeydew though. And I can eat some of the butternut and truly the winter squash I could always eat, most others (BLAH).
Zucchini doesn't taste like much so I can understand not liking it. In another 2 months I will hate it. :) Me, I think the patty pan and crookneck squashes taste like glue.
