When is Melon Maverick ready to harvest?

This is the first year I am growing Melon Maverick.
When do I harvest the fruit?
How do I know it is ready?


Here is the description of the variety:
High yielding cantaloupe. 83 Days. Field tests of Maverick have indicated that this high quality cantaloupe has excellent yield potential. In tests from 2003-2005, Maverick has consistently been one of the best yielding varieties. The 4-5.5 lb fruit have a slight oval shape and are produced on vines that are resistant to powdery mildew and intermediate resistance to Fusarium wilt (races 0 and 2). The thick, bright orange flesh has outstanding flavor, sweetness and 'melt in your mouth' quality. The rind has coarse netting and slight sutures.

it slips (releases from the vine when ripe)

what do you mean?

All musk melons and many of the hybrid honeydews slip when ripe. The stem cracks where attached to the melon and when you pick up the melon, the vine drops away. Sometimes they are picked at half slip, where you give the melon a slight twist to release it from the vine.

I guess you were right.
I went to check my melon today and it just dropped in my hands.
It smells so good. My all kitchen is so fragrant.

Now my next question is ... (kind of stupid ... sorry)

I still have one melon on the vine ... that's it !
Do melons keep producing? or when the fruit is ripe they are done ?

melons have lots of pressure from both insects and diseases. If you can keep the plant healthy and happy, it should set more melons, but it should have set two - four at first set.

I use a "forgotten" area of my yard to plant this melon ... not much watering and kind of poor soil ... so I am happy anyway.
I will try to keep it healthy ... and keep reporting ...

Farmedill you are absolutely right.
Yesterday I look at my melon vine and I could not see my little melon ... I found it on the grass below ... it was rpe and it released himself from the vine .... ouch
I am glad I found my before my lawn people would cut the grass.
