I have Mara des bois and Cabot strawberries in my garden; I planted them last year so this is the first time the Cabots, a June-bearer, have fruited. Even though both varieties are supposed to be very sweet, I'm not finding that to be the case. I had some Mara des bois strawberries in France and they were wonderful, but these are bland with only a few exceptions. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
How to Raise Sweet Strawberries?
How much are you irrigating them? I suspect that over irrigationing makes for a watered down berry.
I do think that has a lot to do with it. I've made a note to self to stop irrigating routinely when it doesn't rain, at least on the strawberries. Many of mine were not only bland but had gone rotten. Between that and the sowbugs there wasn't much to crow about, so I cut them up and sugared them and stuck them in the refrigerator. I'll be able to back off watering the Mara des bois because they're day-neutral, but I fear the Cabots are about done for the season.
